Secrets of the Italian Lifestyle
What I’ve learned from living and traveling in Italy for the last 20 years are the secrets to a lifestyle of longevity. Italians eat pasta, drink coffee, eat gelato, and still manage to have one of the highest concentration of healthy centenarians in the world.
We all could learn a few things from the Tuscan life:
- They eat fresh, whole foods, (their wheat isn’t hybridized or sprayed with glyphosate, and they don’t overeat).
- They are highly social, they get outside, and they walk. A lot. Many don’t even own a car.
- They might have coffee, but it’s a small cup or two, in a day (not 3 Grande Lattes with syrups and suspicious additives)
- They get good quality sleep. Siestas are not only an acceptable part of a workday - they are a required and expected break for everyone
- They express their feelings freely, including anger. Although they may seem dramatic to an outsider, they have a high tolerance for self-expression
- They don’t think that fresh, local, seasonal and organic products are for foodies or hippies. Fresh food is widely available and it is often all they have
- Being overweight is not a social norm, since everyone has access to high quality ingredients and often travels by foot
